D. Manila Lorena Betancourt has developed all information contained in this section, on the exhibition 100 Years of Fashion, Mode and Evolution of Vestido.1860-1960. The text refers to the bourgeois fashion of the time and not the traditional dress. Nevertheless we considered interesting to include it to serve as a counterpoint, showing how was the fashion of the urban upper classes at different times in history when the working classes wore their own style, partly similar and partly different, because is no doubt that the haute couture, spreading down through all levels of the social pyramid, is largely responsible for the evolution experienced by the popular clothing.
We could consider fashion as a frivolous pleasure that reaffirms the vanity and social classes divided according to the clothing. However, fashion is much more than that. Like other customs, fashion, talking about society and its character, shows the elements that are important in a culture and how its people live and works in a historical context, social, occupational and geographic location to Once all this affects every one of the pieces that make clothing.
In the late nineteenth century, it was unthinkable that women come to get rid of the corset, or skirts one day put them to leave to see her legs.
